Afghanistan Election Data

This site is designed to allow users to explore the final results of Afghanistan's September 18, 2010 Wolesi Jirga elections. This data was released by the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) on November 24, 2010 in a database format. As part of its 2010 Afghanistan Election Observation Mission, the National Democratic Institute (NDI) partnered with Development Seed to develop this site and make the results more accessible to election observers, analysts, journalists, policymakers and the general public.

This final set of data in the site includes over 3.9 million valid votes from 14,365 polling stations in 4,691 polling centers across the 370 districts with polling centers and 34 provinces for 2,555 candidates (of which 2,427 received valid votes). The dataset does not include the 1.3 million votes that the IEC had already invalidated prior to the release of the preliminary data on October 20th (almost a quarter of nearly 5.6 million ballots cast) and also does not include the 238,542 votes that they invalidated between the October preliminary results and the final results from the end of November.

While the IEC preliminary results are the main data set, the site is also supplemented with other datasets to add additional context. These datasets include:

  • Complaints from the Electoral Complaints Commission as of early October
  • Estimated voter counts from the IEC in both 2010 and 2009
  • Candidates' English names, photos, and party affiliation from the IEC's final list of candidates
  • Candidate gender and incumbency status as compiled by NDI
  • Security data provided by iMMAP
